Airports in Mauritius: Major Airports and Flight Information
Mauritius’ aviation infrastructure plays an absolutely crucial role for this island nation in the Indian Ocean, as international tourism, global trade, and connections to the African mainland, as well as to Asia and Europe, rely almost entirely on civil aviation. As an isolated archipelago, the country depends on an efficient, modern, and reliable air network that ensures the smooth movement of passengers and cargo.
The country’s undisputed main hub is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), located in the southeast of the main island near Plaine Magnien. As a state-of-the-art, internationally acclaimed airport, it handles the majority of global scheduled and charter traffic. It serves as the primary gateway for millions of vacationers and business travelers and is the home base of the national airline, Air Mauritius, which offers connections to numerous major cities worldwide.
Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport (RRG) in Plaine Corail plays an indispensable role in connecting Rodrigues, the eastern island belonging to the Republic of Mauritius. It serves as a vital domestic link, providing regular flights between Rodrigues and the main island of Mauritius, thereby ensuring regional connectivity and the supply of goods to this more remote island.
The operational structure of Mauritian air traffic is characterized by high international standards, efficient handling processes, and continuous investment in airport infrastructure. Nevertheless, flight operations in the Indian Ocean always require a certain degree of vigilance regarding tropical weather phenomena, which is why flight schedules should be kept flexible during certain seasons.
