Due to its extraordinary topography, Nepal is particularly dependent on air travel. The country stretches from the flat plains of the Terai to the high-altitude regions of the Himalayas. Steep mountain ranges, deep valleys, and hard-to-reach villages often make travel by land time-consuming. Air service therefore plays a vital role in connecting the capital with regional economic hubs, tourist destinations, and remote parts of the country.

The most important hub for Nepal’s air traffic is Kathmandu Airport (KTM). As the capital’s airport, it serves as the main gateway for international travelers and a major departure point for domestic flights. Numerous regions of Nepal are served by flights from Kathmandu, making the airport a key hub for tourism, business travel, and nationwide mobility.

Pokhara Airport (PKR) plays another important role in Nepal’s air network. Pokhara is one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations and a major starting point for tours and trekking trips in the Annapurna region. The airport improves access to the city and connects one of Nepal’s most important tourist centers with Kathmandu and other parts of the country.

Siddharthanagar Airport (BWA) serves the western part of the Terai and improves connectivity within the region around Lumbini. Together with Bharatpur Airport (BHR) and Simara Airport (SIF), it forms a vital link between the capital, the southern parts of the country, and various regions of significant tourist and economic importance. Bharatpur serves in particular as a gateway to the Chitwan region, while Simara provides a fast connection to the south of the country.

In eastern Nepal, the airports in Biratnagar (BIR) and Bhadrapur (BDP) serve important regional functions. They connect the economically significant cities and densely populated areas of the eastern Terai with Kathmandu. The eastern route network is supplemented by Janakpur Airport (JKR), which connects the city of the same name and the surrounding region to the national air transport network.

For the western and southwestern parts of the country, the airports in Nepalgunj (KEP), Dhangadhi (DHI), and Birendranagar (SKH) are of particular importance. They serve as regional transportation hubs and facilitate onward travel to areas that would take a considerable amount of time to reach by land from Kathmandu. At the same time, they improve the population’s mobility and connect more remote regions to the country’s larger cities.

The smaller mountain airports of Lukla (LUA), Jomsom (JOM), and Phaplu (PPL) play a special role. Lukla Airport is a major starting point for trips to the Everest region. Jomsom provides access to the Kali Gandaki Valley and serves as a gateway to the Mustang region, while Phaplu offers another connection to the Solukhumbu District. Due to their location in the mountains, these airports are particularly important for tourism and for reaching remote areas.

Aviation also plays a vital role in supplying Nepal. In hard-to-reach mountainous regions, smaller airports and airfields can facilitate the transport of medical supplies, food, and other essential goods. Especially in areas where road connections are lacking or are affected by weather conditions, air connections represent an important alternative for regional mobility.

In summary, the 14 airports—Kathmandu, Pokhara, Siddharthanagar, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, Simara, Bharatpur, Jomsom, Janakpur, Bhadrapur, Dhangadhi, Birendranagar, Lukla, and Phaplu form a diverse air transport network. While Kathmandu serves as the central hub, the other airports fulfill important regional, economic, and tourism functions. Together, they help bridge Nepal’s vast elevation differences and hard-to-reach landscapes, connecting the country’s various regions.
