Airports in São Tomé and Príncipe: Major Airports and Flight Information

✈️ Príncipe✈️ São Tomé

The equatorial island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe relies on two central airports—each serving one of the two main islands—for its connections to the rest of the world as well as for domestic travel. Although the country is one of the smallest nations in Africa, these two gateways serve as the vital lifeline for the burgeoning ecotourism industry, the transport of goods, and the country’s cohesion.

By far the most important transportation hub is São Tomé International Airport (Aeroporto Internacional Nuno Xavier, IATA: TMS), located about five kilometers north of the capital on the main island of the same name. As the only international hub, it handles all long-haul travel. From here, there are regular flights to Europe—primarily to Lisbon—as well as to major hubs on the African mainland such as Luanda, Libreville, and Accra. To accommodate the growing number of visitors, the airport is undergoing extensive expansion and modernization efforts, which include increasing terminal capacity and upgrading the runway and security infrastructure.

Its counterpart on the smaller sister island is Príncipe Airport (IATA: PCP), located near the island’s capital, Santo António. Since the entire island of Príncipe is protected by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, the airport plays a special role in sustainable luxury and nature tourism. Thanks to a runway that has been extended and paved in recent years, regional turboprop aircraft can land here safely. In addition to supporting tourism, the airport serves the residents of Príncipe as an indispensable means of access to medical care and the delivery of urgent cargo.

Since the sea crossing of the Gulf of Guinea is very time-consuming and weather-dependent, the approximately 35-minute flight between São Tomé and Príncipe serves as the archipelago’s primary and most reliable link. Together, the two airports ensure the country’s long-term viability and enable it to strike a balance between global connectivity and the protection of its sensitive island ecosystems.
