Airports in Turkey: Major Airports and Flight Information
Turkey, officially known as the Republic of Turkey (Türkiye Cumhuriyeti), is a transcontinental country that plays a significant role in the history, politics, and culture of both Europe and Asia. With an area of approximately 783,000 square kilometers and a population of around 85 million people, the country extends geographically largely across Anatolia in Asia, while a smaller portion lies in Eastern Thrace on the European continent. The capital, Ankara, is the political center, while Istanbul, one of the world’s largest metropolises, is considered the cultural and economic heart of the country—a city that serves as a bridge between two continents and captivates with its rich history and diversity.
Turkey’s history stretches back thousands of years and is marked by significant civilizations such as the Hittites, Greeks, Romans, and Byzantines, before it became the core region of the Ottoman Empire, which ruled over large parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa for more than 600 years. Following the collapse of the empire during World War I, the modern, secular Republic of Turkey was established in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Through comprehensive reforms, the country adopted a Western orientation and remains to this day caught between tradition and modernity.
Turkey is known for its cultural diversity, which is reflected in its music, dance, architecture, language, and cuisine. Turkish cuisine is world-renowned and combines influences from the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Central Asia—with typical dishes such as kebab, meze, and börek, as well as sweet specialties like baklava. Tea and coffee play a central role in social life. The country also boasts a rich tradition in the arts and literature, encompassing both classical and modern movements.
Economically, Turkey is an important emerging power with a diversified industrial sector, a strong construction industry, a significant agricultural sector, and a thriving tourism industry. The diversity of its landscapes—from the sandy beaches of the Turkish Riviera to the volcanic formations of Cappadocia and the snow-capped mountains in the east—attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year.
Today, Turkey is a geopolitically significant country that serves as a bridge between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East and is represented in both NATO and various international organizations. Despite domestic political tensions and challenges, Turkey remains a country of great strategic, cultural, and historical significance.
